Welsh Rarebit in Elmswell

Here it is - my brunch from yesterday at that little cafe in Elmswell -where Goodfellows butchers used to be next to Mace.  Is it called Bumbles? I met my sister for a coffee.  They do good cappucino and my flat white (I have to tell them what to do - no one in Suffolk knows what that is yet ...) was good too. I had this Welsh Rarebit which tasted much nicer than the picture looks, because the Worcester sauce has made it go a bit brown. My other sister once told me a fab recipe for Welsh Rarebit  -  grated cheddar and a large spoonful of mayo - under the grill. Browns and bubbles up really nicely. I think they do hot lunches here too because a very friendly couple were having casserole and mashed potatoes at another table.  Now I see the picture it reminds me - I wish they would get rid of that horrible plastic Christmas table cloth!

Edis of Ely make the best takeaway food snacks in their butchers in St Johns Street. I have mentioned them before - their still warm scotch eggs and at least three types of pasties and sausage rolls. I bought a Tin Miners for £1.35 - minced lamb, carrots and onions, perfectly seasoned, with pastry shiny with beaten egg, oozing a bit of gravy but still crisp. And I was the youngest customer in the shop !

The Angel – scones with cream and jam

Nice to meet a friend here in Bury on Saturday for a cup - well a good sized pot actually - of tea, with a fresh scones, the thickest cream and those little jars of strawberry jam. Their sofas are the most comfortable seats in the town, it was warm on a freezing cold day and there was free wi fi access for the laptop. And the staff are REALLY nice!

What a lovely pair of villages! Had to take my son to football so wander about looking for a home-made food shop for a late breakfast snack. Found the Co Op, but then the blinds go up on the local deli so I buy two very large sausage rolls at £1.20 each.  Nice pastry and local sausage meat although my son thinks the ones he makes are better. There are home-made quiches in the freezer and a couple of nice looking cakes, but not sure why a shelf full of toilet rolls haven't been hidden round the corner...?!

Ooops, ate a bit of bacon…

Forgot I was on veggie week and had bacon and eggs for breakfast, but made up for it by making delicious pakora with spinach out of the garden for lunch. Inspector X gave me her recipe - it's so easy - but it's on the gram flour packet too, if you can find any. I asked in Tesco just to see if they knew what it was, not expecting them to have any, and they bought me Rye flour. So went to Ipswich to the Norwich road shops where they have everything you could possibly ever want and spent too much on scotch bonnet peppers, plantain chips and frozen samosa's as well.

Scotch eggs (again)

My friend from France is here and the one food she remembers (and wants to buy) are the Scotch eggs we had from the Edris of Ely butchers! So we eat them in the Abbey Gardens. I had a Cornish Pasty.

A foodie anniversary – Caribbean style

Suffolk foodie is one year old today. Celebrate by going to Lidl for my utter favourite  bar of dark chocolate with nuts in, and find Caribbean meat patties! Expecting them to taste awful but they are surprisingly authentic (well, they are made in Birmingham) with just the right amount of heat from scotch bonnet peppers. Although home made ones would have more filling it's not bad for Stowmarket!

Tomato mini pizza

So many tomatoes at the moment that I have had every recipe I can think of and made soup, pasta sauce, ratatouille and lots of others.  But this was simple and delicious and used up a bit of old ciabatta at the same time. So easy I'm not going to put it in Recipes - just spread pesto (from a jar not home made) on the bread, halved cherry tomatoes and a shaving of parmesan, then grill until brown. If you teach your children this they can make it after school, and it works really well on half a muffin too, just call it mini pizza.

Hello Haverhill

Ladies and gentlemen and other people , this is about to become a website and so I  have been to a training course  (www.phoenixinternetconsultancy.co.uk) in Haverhill to learn how to do it. The sandwiches and freshly made mini -quiches were so good I had to find out where they were from. Around the corner is a cafe where they do a dish of the week (madras beef curry when I went) and other lovely home-made food. Italian meatballs, mozarella and tomato sauce - all home-made, for £3.20 anyone?
