Cradle has got a real Hoxton/Shoreditch look about it and also the kind of place you could imagine finding Gwyneth or Madonna. The tiny cafe/bakery was buzzing with activity when we went for lunch last week and it's obviously quite the meeting place for the yummy mummies and the cool vegans of Sudbury. Simple and stylish, it's completely plant based with everything made from scratch on site, including nut butters and an excellent rooibos based fermented kombucha (so hipster, so refreshing). Bread is baked on site, with house milled rye, wheat and spelt flour used in the proper crusty loaves. There's also some very tempting patisserie on display. A small blackboard menu offers an interesting and surprisingly fancy range of dishes with thankfully no fakin' bacon but just prime, fresh ingredients superbly cooked.

Lunch today was at Josef's Vegetarian Cafe in Bury St Edmunds. This cafe reminds me of the late 70's and 80's. Days of Bagwhan and the Rajneeshees when they were resident at their commune in Herringswell. Bright decor and the smell of patchouli with a slight hessian look going through to the Lizard Room. The food is very good. I ate the Felafel with spicy salsa, cucumber and yoghurt raita in a warm hummus pitta. The salads which were not mentioned on the menu were particularly good. But oh, the service. So laid back man.
Great to see the slightly hippy, bohemian Rainbow Cafe in Cambridge is still going strong. It was one of East Anglia's first vegetarian restaurants and opened in the 1980's. Lunch yesterday was Gado Gado ( the picture does not really do it justice) resh seasonal vegetables stir fried and served Indonesian style with turmeric brown rice and side dishes of peanut sauce, plum sauce and tamari added an extra punch of flavour. What a fantastic menu of interesting vegetarian world food. I fancy the Vegan Artichoke Parcel next time.
All you vegetarians and vegans - fed up with the unimaginative offerings in most restaurants and pubs? I had a really nice lunch here at this completely vegetarian pub a few miles out of Needham Market. What a treat! No meat!
Seven starters, eight mains, seven puds - plus a specials board. And you can get takeaways and freezer meals too.
Following the vegetarian edition of OFM this weekend, will try to follow Paul McCartney's example and not eat meat for a week. And as long as I stick to curries this shouldn't be a problem as I am having a bit of a craving for a good Leicester dhal and rice, with puri's and samosas. So made a chick pea and potato curry tonight - one of the easiest and most delicious, with fennel and coriander from the garden.
So many tomatoes at the moment that I have had every recipe I can think of and made soup, pasta sauce, ratatouille and lots of others. But this was simple and delicious and used up a bit of old ciabatta at the same time. So easy I'm not going to put it in Recipes - just spread pesto (from a jar not home made) on the bread, halved cherry tomatoes and a shaving of parmesan, then grill until brown. If you teach your children this they can make it after school, and it works really well on half a muffin too, just call it mini pizza.
So easy, so delicious, so nutritious, so warming and so cheap. A sweet potato and lentil dhal with naan bread - didn't make the bread but I did use coriander seeds out of the garden.
Have you noticed? Unlike asparagus and strawberries now these are truly seasonal and grow like weeds. I dug these up before the ground got too hard and made a delicious lunch with a grating of Lincolnshire Poacher cheddar on top. Mmmm...
